Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum

The audio tour of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City is now available in seven languages.

It was produced  and written by Orpheo USA.

The audio tour is narrated by Bill White, President of the Intrepid Museum, and by Susan Marenoff, the Museum's Executive Director.

The heart of the audio tour is a series of original interviews with Crewmembers of the Intrepid, including Sen. John McCain and Admiral ‘Doc’ Abbot, the ship’s Captain in 1962, and with Friends of the Intrepid, including Pres. George H. W. Bush, Gen. Colin Powell and Astronaut Scott Carpenter. The audio tour is available in English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Japanese and Chinese.

The tour will be available at all times until one hour before the Museum’s closing time (which varies depending on the season). To take the audio tour, the Intrepid provides Orpheo audio players and headsets plus special equipment for the hard of hearing. A sign language tour seen on  Orpheo’s multimedia handheld player is also available.

The USS Intrepid was an extraordinarily tough warship. As Mr. White says, “The Japanese kept hitting the Intrepid, but she kept coming back, and it happened so many times that the Japanese admirals called her ‘the Ghost Ship.’ ”

Many of the audio tour’s first hand accounts are from sailors who survived the frequent kamikaze and torpedo attacks during WWII, and from pilots who flew off the ship and tell the visitor about their mid air dogfights and their air strikes, including the sinking of the largest battleship ever built, the Yamato. These interviews are with witnesses and participants of history. Their stories are riveting and touching. Several excerpts may be found below.
